Technical Operations overview

Technical Operations includes the maintenance, repair and overhaul of our aircraft. This includes aircraft maintenance technicians, engineers, planners, ground equipment and facilities teams, supply chain teams, and more.

Job Overview and responsibilities

If you like to work in a fast-paced, challenging environment and like to solve complex problems, then join a dynamic, enthusiastic, and innovative team in one of United Airlines Operations Planning groups. As an intern in Planning, you will work alongside our Strategic, Base, or Line Planning teams to optimize maintenance plans to minimize out of service aircraft, maximize capacity utilization, and reduce overall life cycle cost. You will be working on planning projects such as data mining, discovering trends, creating analysis, assisting with continuous improvements, and giving presentations. This position requires innovation and critical strategic thinking to drive and deliver improvements in the planning organization. As an Intern on the Technical Operations Planning team, you will be responsible to:

  • Develop and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) to track accuracy plans

  • Automate existing maintenance reports

  • Support team with day to day responsibilities as well as identifying and resolving issues arising between the different stakeholders such as Planning, Engineering, Records, Maintenance Programs

  • Audit plans to drive accuracy and improve performance to plan

  • Conduct data analysis and display data in an articulate and meaningful manner that resonates with project champion, owner and team members


  • Undergraduate student graduating in Fall/Winter of 2020 or spring/summer 2021

  • Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise and actionable manner

  • Ability to handle simultaneous projects and adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship now or in the future

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Knowledge of aircraft systems operations

  • Currently possesses or working towards obtaining a FAA Airframe and Powerplant License (A&P)

  • Experience with data visualization tools (Spotfire, Tableau, etc.)

  • Data analysis and quantitative modeling skills
