United Airlines Intern – Technical Operations Data and Analytics (Chicago – Summer 2019) in Chicago, Illinois

Job Overview and Responsibilities:

Assist Analytics team in supporting Technical Operations organization including Maintenance Planning, Engineering, and Inventory Planning. This role requires an individual with a passion for problem solving and data analytics with the willingness to dig deep into details while also being able to understand the big picture. Candidate should have experience with data extraction, data manipulation, statistical modeling, and presenting results in a clear and concise manner. Strategic thinking and strong interpersonal communication skills required.

  • Extracts data from a variety of sources for use in analysis and models (ex. SQL Server, Teradata)

  • Completes ad-hoc reporting and data analysis (ex. Delay and cancel rates, out of service metrics)

  • Applies statistical analysis (ex. Regression, ANOVA)

  • Helps develop new models (ex. Multiple regression, random forest, time series)

  • Maintain and enhance existing dashboards (ex. Spotfire)

  • Communicate analysis results to all levels of the organization

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field like Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Econometrics or other related field

  • Experience coding in Python and/or R

  • Experience or familiarity with database querying tools (ex. SQL)

  • Experience or familiarity with visualization tools (ex. Tableau, Spotfire)

  • Experience in manipulating and analyzing complex, high volume, high dimensionality data from various sources to highlight patterns and relationships

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Must be available to work 40 hours a week from May - August

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualifications

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred

  • Working towards a Master's Degree in a quantitative field like Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics or other related field

  • Knowledge of predictive modeling and statistical analysis

  • Knowledge of airline industry a plus

  • Ability to write advanced SQL queries
