Job overview and responsibilities

The Aircraft Health Monitoring team plays a vital role in improving the on-time and completion performance of United's network by turning unexpected aircraft system failures into scheduled maintenance. The Senior Engineer connects the operational team of expert aircraft troubleshooters to aircraft engineers, data scientists, and application developers by speaking the languages of all teams and aligning efforts around United's predictive maintenance strategy. This means involvement in aircraft modifications, predictive models, and health monitoring software.

  • Serves as AHM team representative for aircraft modifications, including installation of new hardware (sensors, wiring, avionics) and software (ACARS, ACMS)

  • Collaborates with Reliability Engineers on top causes of mechanical delays and cancellations for each of United's fleet types to align relevant sensor data, fault messages, and failure modes

  • Scopes new predictive model opportunities for aircraft systems by interfacing with aircraft engineers and translating subject matter expertise into structured data problems for the Tech Ops Analytics team

  • Identifies optimal sensor data frames and real-time data transmissions for predictive maintenance, then works with avionics engineering to make required changes

  • Develops and pitches business cases for new aircraft modifications or ground-based software

  • Communicates the AHM team's software requirements to IT and helps ensure both current and future software meet all the team's needs

  • Manages formal projects through the Project Management Lifecycle (PMLC)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (aerospace, mechanical, electrical, etc.)

  • At least 2 years experience in aircraft engineering

  • Broad knowledge of aircraft systems and/or engines on United's mainline fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft

  • Some background in avionics hardware (DFDAU, CFDIU, AID, ONS, data buses) and software (ACARS, ACMS messages), along with key enablers of aircraft data (sensors, wiring, wireless data transmission, QAR data maps).

  • Ability to communicate effectively with both operational teams (AHM, Maintenance Control, Tech Support) and strategic teams (Reliability, Engineering, Analytics) within Tech Ops

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

  • Familiarity with avionics and technology processes to get data from aircraft sensors all the way to ground-based software preferred

  • Broad knowledge of airline maintenance operations and handoffs between teams preferred. Experience with aircraft health monitoring software (Boeing AHM, Airbus Airman, in-house United applications) preferred

  • Fluency in data structures and organizing an analytical problem preferred

  • Exposure to data science and advanced analytical methods preferred

  • Experience working with aircraft sensor and fault data preferred
