Technical Operations

Technical Operations is the maintenance, repair and overhaul division of United. The department includes aircraft maintenance technicians, engineers, planners, ground equipment and facilities teams, supply chain teams and more.

Ground Service Equipment Technician

Location: DEN - Denver, CO

Starting salary: $24.80 per hour

Job responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, repair and complete preventative maintenance on Ground Service Equipment (both motorized and non-motorized)

  • Work includes diagnostic testing and repair of gas engines, transmissions, suspension and brake systems

  • Troubleshooting and repair of diesel engines, heavy industrial equipment, including large aircraft air conditioners, air start and ground electrical power units

Additional information

  • Ground Service Equipment Technicians must be willing and able to work around the clock shifts, including weekends and holidays and work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Schedules are bid and awarded according to seniority

  • Ground Service Equipment Technicians are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) and salary increases will be administered according to the current IBT / United contract

  • Shift differentials of $0.51/hour and $0.58/hour for working and afternoon or evening shift respectively are paid in addition to the hourly rate

  • New employees are required to join the union within 90 days of employment

  • There is an initiation fee for joining the union and subsequent monthly dues which are set by the IBT Local Lodge


  • Twenty-four (24) months experience required in trouble shooting, repair, and maintenance of gas and diesel engines; electrical and hydraulic systems, or motorized equipment supporting airport ground handling operations

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Valid US driver's license

  • Shift work required (Must be willing and able to work any shift assigned in a 365-day-a-year / 24-hour-a-day operation that will include early mornings, late nights, overnights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed)

  • Must be willing and able to climb and work from ladders

  • Must be willing and able to walk for extended periods of time

  • Must be willing and able to perform work that involves moderate lifting

  • Must be willing and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Must be willing and able to work where there will be exposure to high noise levels

  • Must be willing to take a pre-placement physical abilities test, hearing and vision tests, and drug screen

  • Must pass a 10-year background check

  • Candidate must be able to clear a fingerprint-based criminal history check in order to obtain and retain credentials necessary for the position

  • Position-specific clearances include but are not limited to FAA, TSA, Port Authority, U.S. Customs and U.S. Postal service clearances

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualifications

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is essential function of the position

  • This position is located in Denver, CO and United Airlines will not offer any type of relocation assistance


  • Certificate of completion from an accredited automotive school

  • ASE Certification

  • HVAC Certification

  • Basic computer knowledge (data entry/retrieval)
