Technical Operations

Technical Operations is the maintenance, repair and overhaul division of United. The department includes aircraft maintenance technicians, engineers, planners, ground equipment and facilities teams, supply chain teams and more.

Job overview and responsibilities

Material & Process Engineer is responsible for economical selection and process application of aircraft maintenance materials while ensuring compliance with airworthiness (FAA), safety (OSHA), environmental (EPA) and transportation (DOT) requirements.

  • Provide technical justification based on FAA accepted, FAA approved or UAL equivalent data.

  • Obtain toxilogical approval for all materials.

  • Provide technical data for necessary Safety precautions.

  • Provide technical data to ensure environmental protection.

  • Provide classifications for transportation of hazardous materials.

  • Provide shelf life and procurement information.

  • Update Online Chemical Database for aircraft and non-aircraft materials.

  • Propose creative solutions for improvements and in solving chemical process issues.

  • Proactively lead teams of larger scope (or portions of projects) that manage the identification, development and implementation of process improvements to address tactical and strategic objectives in a regulated manufacturing facility.

  • Participate in a technical evaluation of new production site, processes or potential product for feasibility (due diligence).

  • Originate/revise technical documents to approve new and update process manuals as required for operations.

  • Provide technical justification based on FAA accepted, FAA approved or UAL equivalent data.

  • Provide detailed process accomplishment specifications as required for operations.

  • Provide shipping classifications in conformance with 49CFR/IATA for Engineering Change Repair Authorization (EC/RA) documents approving hazardous materials.

  • Provide classifications for transportation of hazardous materials.

  • Ensure classifications are reflected in the Online Hazardous Parts Database through coordination with SFOIP.

  • Respond to technical inquiries on dangerous goods transportation, chemical spills containment, hazardous waste disposal, and safe storage and handling of chemicals.

  • Material & Process' Technical Focal for internal and external customers.

  • Represent United regarding materials issues to internal customers and external organizations.

  • Act as technical consultants for Line/Base Maintenance, Corporate Safety, Facilities, Quality Assurance, Procurement, Stores, OSV Providers, MRO Customers, OEM, ATA and Regulatory Agencies by way of Internal team participation, OEM technical interface, Industry programs representation, and resolution of material related issues.

  • Provide industry leadership in finding compliant materials and processes solutions to implement in aircraft maintenance.

  • Keep abreast of new materials and process technology.

  • Participate in M&P Specialty Meetings and Industry Groups.

  • Expand knowledge through applicable Workshops and Seminars.

  • Provide materials and HazMat support to UA departments.

  • Effectively presents complex technical information to an audience of varied expertise/level for guidance, education and decision-making.

  • Obtain and maintain current 49CFR/IATA qualifications by completing initial and recurrent specialized training.

  • Mentors peers/colleagues in areas of expertise.

  • Approve Chemical Materials

  • Author and maintain United Airlines manuals and databases

  • Approval of Hazardous Materials

  • Act as United’s Material and Process Technical Focal for internal and external customers


  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering

  • With a focus on:

  • Chemical-based manufacturing - applying chemistry for commercial-quantity production of a wide variety of products, including:

• Fuels (gasoline, natural gas)

• Petro-Chemicals (chemicals obtained from petroleum or natural gas)

• Industrial Chemicals (acids, alkalis, organics, salts)

• Plastics, Polymers and Fibers

• Consumer Products (paints, soaps, household cleaners, etc.)

• Advanced Materials (ceramics, electronic materials, composites, etc.)

• Environmental regulations (HAZMAT, Air Pollution Quality control, Water Resources, etc.)

  • Demonstrated advance use of Microsoft Office products

  • Strong written and oral communication skills to appropriate level units

  • Strong interpersonal skills to appropriate levels within the sponsoring business units

  • Team player, working well in a collaborative setting

  • Acts as a resource to colleagues with less experience

  • Flexibility of support times when necessary


  • FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Licenses

  • Ability to communicate to team members and contractors who come from a broad spectrum of disciplines

  • Can conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

  • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including upper management, clients, and other departments

  • Ability to bring project to successful completion through political sensitivity

  • Adept at conducting research into project-related issues and products

  • Successful management of medium size Material and Process organization


This position will be hired as either an Engineer – Level 6 or a Senior Engineer – Level 5; the selection will be based on level of experience, qualifications and certifications.

  • Engineer (level 6) requires entry level to 5 years of Chemical engineering experience

  • Senior Engineer (level 5) requires a minimum of 5 years as a Chemical and Process engineer or similar role and experience with background in chemical and materials science as applied in the aviation maintenance industry

  • 3 or more years work experience in the aviation industry capacity, including all aspects of process development and execution

  • 5 or more years work experience in the aviation industry capacity, including all aspects of process development and execution

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
