Technical Operations

Technical Operations is the maintenance, repair and overhaul division of United. The department includes aircraft maintenance technicians, engineers, planners, ground equipment and facilities teams, supply chain teams and more.

Job Overview and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the supervision, direction, coordination, and accountability for the assigned work centers ensuring that all activities are performed in a safe manner and in compliance with all company, and regulatory agencies rules, policies, and laws

  • Ensures their teams have the appropriate resources available and holds them accountable for work performed

  • Uses the Continuous Improvement tools available to drive process improvements

  • Provide leadership and direction to labor workforce to maximize productivity and output in accordance with collective bargaining agreements while ensuring necessary resources are available. Build / reinforce a fair and respectful work environment through consistent application of CBA work rules and company policies

  • Execute performance goals and objectives aligning with divisional and company goals. Maintain a high level of awareness of operational, financial, compliance, safety and human resource related performance objectives. Responsible for labor time keeping and cost control within product line. Responsible for tactical, strategic and budgetary activities.

  • Oversee safety and security of the facilities and operations to ensure regulatory compliance of technical operations activities. Interface with regulatory authorities. Ensure regulatory compliance of technical operations activities on local basis. Participate in the development and executing the tactical plans to implement strategy.

  • Maintain a high level of communication with employees within assigned shops. Report status of operations, highlighting significant events to leadership while providing direction to assigned personnel to ensure shop and department objectives are achieved.

  • Meets or exceeds operational performance goals

  • Meets or exceeds business plan objectives

  • Identifies the need for change and / or improvement and executes the same involving the appropriate people and level of resources as needed

  • Builds and maintains professional and productive work environment for labor groups and management teams

  • Effectively communicates with employees


  • High School Diploma or GED/Education equivalent

  • Formal education in one of the trade skills or equivalent work experience

  • Journeyman level in one of the trade skill

  • Three (3) or more years in one of the trades, experience in managing in a union environment

  • Leadership, communication skills, computer skills, attention to detail, financial experience, timeliness to priorities


  • AA or advanced degree in skill or formal trade school graduate

  • Completed apprenticeship in one of the trade skills

  • Pervious supervisory experience over facilities skill group

  • Proven accountability in a management role

  • Knowledge of planning and project management

  • Exposure to construction projects and supervisory experience


  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
